Original Medicine: Wisdom-keepers of the Soul, Warrior, Healer, Visionary, Teacher: A Men's Retreat

Many indigenous societies believe that we all possess a personal power, duplicated nowhere else on earth.  This combination of talents and abilities can be called “original medicine.”  It is original because it originates in each individual’s personal destiny.  It is medicine because it holds the potential for healing for self and others.  When we are “not in our medicine,” we are cut off from the healing that can flow between us and other humans, Mother Nature, and all creation.  When we are able to access this vital energy, we can bring our gifts to the world and ourselves.

We long to access and express our personal vision, power, wisdom and love.  As men, we know we carry these attributes deep inside us yet we too seldom find the opportunities to live into them and share them with others.

On this retreat, we will access the sacred archetypes of Warrior, Healer, Visionary, and Teacher.  Through the time-tested methods of storytelling, dance, singing, and silence, we will awaken and activate the dormant qualities within us which have been itching to be set free.  We will face our fears, share our grief, release our anger, erupt in laughter, and transcend in joy.  We will connect deeply with nature around us and the nature in ourselves and each other.

Join us in the rustic Casa San Ysidro dorm at La Casa de Maria as we create together a community of men thoroughly drenched in their experience of soul and joyfully in touch with spirit.  Take part in these hours of communion and celebration in which we re-create our lives and bring hope to our community.

Retreat Leaders: Tom McGee and Richard Palmer

Tom is a psychotherapist in private practice in Ventura.  He employs dream work, nature practices, wilderness experience, trauma work, focused attention, compassion, and a good deal of imagination in his work. He spends as much time as possible at the beach and in the mountains.

Richard has been a counselor and minister for the past twenty years.  His love of soul and his devotion to restoring the community of men has led Richard to become active in bringing initiation practices to the community.  He co-facilitated the most recent cycle of initiation in Ojai.  He is a poet, a lover of beauty and a fierce advocate for the impassioned life.  He has studied many forms of healing and brings his wisdom and experience to the mending of culture.
* Please note a correction - in the La Casa newsletter Richard was incorrectly identified as a therapist, he is a couselor/minister.
